Niomi Sands graduated from The University of Newcastle with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours in 2000 and completed a Masters of Museum Studies at The University of Sydney in 2007. Sands' practice is installation based and she has exhibited in solo and group shows nationally over the past nine years. Sands was one of the founding directors of Field Contemporary Art Space (formally Intrados Gallery), an artist run gallery that supported the emerging artist community in Newcastle for over five years (the gallery closed in 2007).
Sands was recently appointed to the position of curator at Port Macquarie Hastings Regional Gallery. Prior to this appointment Sands worked as the Assistant Registrar at the Museum of Contemporary Art and worked on a number of national and international exhibitions including Primavera, Sydney Biennale, Body Double Julie Rrap and Centre Pompidou Video Art 1965 – 2005. Sands is passionate about contemporary art and last year toured Europe viewing major international contemporary exhibitions including Documenta, the Münster Sculpture Project and the Venice and Istanbul Biennales.
